Business, technical exams start on Monday

A total of 24,161 candidates are expected to sit for the May/June 2019 Uganda Business and Technical Examinations Board (UBTEB) which open on Monday.
The students will sit for diploma and certificate courses including civil, mechanical, building and civil engineering; fisheries, meteorology, agriculture, wildlife and lands, and survey.
The first phase of the exams started with a briefing for candidates for technical diploma and higher diploma programmes on Friday. The exams will run until June 17.
A significantly higher number of students are sitting for the exams this year compared to last year's 23,560 candidates who sat for the exams in 2018 edition.
Statistics show that more students are enrolling for vocational training at institutions countrywide as a result of the Skilling Uganda strategy.
Launched in 2011, the programme is an ambitious plan to create a pool of at least one million Ugandans with skills and competencies relevant in the labour market by the year 2020.
Malpractices
Over 600 examination managers and supervisors have been deployed to supervise and monitor the conduct of examinations at different centres countrywide.
The board has warned candidates to desist from any form of malpractice, citing new stringent punitive measures for candidates involved in the vice.
According to Nahamya, the new regulations recommend cancellation of results, imprisonment, and withdrawal of examination, among others, for candidates or institutions involved.
For instance, collusion to cheat examinations will result in cancellation of results of one's entire semester. The same applied to smuggling unauthorized materials such as phones and calculators.
Other offences include: writing on body parts, writing on the question paper caution or repeating of the listed offences, which could result in disqualification or cancellation of all exam results.
