Students compete in inaugural schools golf tournament

The program is targeting to train 10,000 students within the next 2 years.

 
Over 150 students from across the country get the opportunity to train, compete and showcase their golf skills on a larger scale thanks to the Golf in Schools program that was launched last month by the Uganda Ladies Golf Union (ULGU).
 
The program is targeting to train 10,000 students within the next 2 years.
 
Today at Kitante, while over 80 players will compete over the 18 holes, the rest will be honing their skills and testing themselves in the basics of the game.
 
"With the support of our key sponsor Commercial Bank of Africa-Uganda, there are over 150 students currently under training.  This is going down as the largest golf sport development initiative in the country, as well as mark history where for the first time over 40 girls participate in a premier open," ULGU president Eva Magala said.
 
"This is a landmark event that will help create awareness and generate goodwill for junior golf development, eventually creating an uptake conveyor belt for this distinguished sport in Uganda".
 
The tournament will see over 100 students from different schools compete for two return tickets to Dubai Sponsored by Emirates, for a once in a lifetime chance to play at the prestigious Dubai Creek Golf Club.
 
Some of the schools that have signed up for participation include; Kings College Budo, Gems Cambridge International, City Parents Kampala Primary, Rainbow International, 7 Hills International, Gayaza High School, Nyakasura High School, and Air Force High school.
 
The initiative is made successful by partnership and sponsorships from Ugandan tech heavyweight Efficiency, Commercial Bank of Africa Uganda (cba), Emirates Uganda, Dubai Creek Golf Club, Uganda Golf Club, Palm Valley Golf and Country Club, Uganda Golf Union, African Golf Network and The R&A.
 
"As a bank, we are fully dedicated to supporting Golf and growth of sporting talent in Uganda. It allows our youth to be active and engaged positively out of school activities while helping them to acquire people skills crucial to growing the economy" CBA CEO Anthony Ndegwa stated.
 
The tournament format will be stroke play for the handicapped juniors and Texas scramble for the none-handicapped juniors.
