Bundibugyo - The State minister for gender and culture, Peace Mutuuzo, has commended the Obudingiya Bwa Bamba cultural leader for promoting peace and unity among the different tribes living in Bundibugyo district.

Mutuuzo said last week after meeting the kingdom elders and the king Lt. Col. Martin Kamya, that she was happy that peace had been restored in Bundibugyo and the entire Rwenzori region, and that people are doing their work without fear.

"Instead of some leaders, focusing on what united people, they always point out differences, which causes disunity with disastrous consequences. I am happy that the people in Bundibugyo are living together in harmony," Mutuuzo said.

She said that Kamya had played a very big role in ensuring that all the four major tribes of Bundibugyo, including; the Bamba, Babwisi, Bakonjo and Vanoma leave in peace and harmony.

"Government reorganised the Bamba cultural institution, with the aim of promoting culture and unity, noting that the institution should stick to its roles," said Mutuuzo, adding that they are concerned about that people are being divided by both political and cultural leaders.

"The consequences of these divisive tendencies can be grave and beyond what we can imagine as history tells us," Mutuuzo said.

She said that it was the central role of leaders to ensure that the people they lead remain united and focused on one goal of development.

Mutuuzo asked political leaders in the district to respect the kingdom officials, saying that they should work together to mobilize people for development.

"According to the law governing cultural institutions, it is not compulsory to pay allegiance to the cultural institution, but the cultural leaders should be left to do their work without any interference," Mutuuzo said.

Mutuuzo who was in the district to resolve a conflict between the kingdom officials and the district political leaders addressed the district security committee and asked them to work in harmony.

Wilson Mubulya, the kingdom Prime Minister accused a section of political leaders in Bundibugyo for promoting divisions for their selfish interests.
