KAMPALA - Officials from Post Bank Uganda are being investigated by the State House Anti-Corruption Unit over abuse of office.

The unit, led by Lt. Col Edith Nakalema, says the move was based on "credible information" they had received.

Nakalema's team "carried out a special investigation on Post Bank Uganda" on Friday, according to a press release.

They acted "under Article 99 (4) of the Constitution of Uganda, in liaison with the Criminal Investigation Directorate acting under Article 120 (3) (a) and the Office of the Auditor General acting under Article 163 (3)".

It is understood that during this probe, the bank is continuing with its normal operations.

"The matter under investigation is for abuse of office and a number of senior bank personnel are under investigation. Bank operations remain uninterrupted," says the statement.

It adds: "This investigation is being carried out in consultation with Bank of Uganda and Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development. Further updates will be provided in due course."

The State House Anti-Corruption Unit was officially launched last year in December by President Yoweri Museveni.

The idea was that it effectively works and assists the already existing  anti-corruption agencies, including the Inspectorate of Government, the Office of the  Auditor General, the Anti-corruption Court, the Public Procurement and Disposal of Public Assets Authority (PPDA) and the Uganda Police.

It is nearly five months now since its official launch and several cases have been reported to the unit through the available channels,  which has led to a number of operations.
