KAMPALA - Double Commonwealth Games champion Joshua Cheptegei has been crowned the USPA Sports Personality of the Year 2018.
Looking sharp in a blue suit and a bow-tie, the 22-year-old athlete received his award from ICT minister Frank Tumwebaze, who was the chieft guest at Friday evening's colourful function.
Around this time last year, towards mid-April, Cheptegei sealed his double glory at the Commonwealth Games at Australia's Gold Coast when he beat his closest challenger Canada's Mohammed Ahmed to win the men's 10,000m final.
That completed a double for the young runner, after winning the 5,000m race.
At the end of last month in Aarhus, Denmark, the man from Kapchorwa district made local history when he became the first Ugandan to win the Senior Men's World Cross-Country title - a year after his body had let him down on home soil.
On Friday, John Oduke received the legendary award from National Council of Sports assistant general secretary David Katende.
Earlier in the day, Cheptegei was voted the IAAF Moment of the Month for his outstanding performance in Aarhus, where he led a Ugandan 1-2 finish. Compatriot Jacob Kiplimo took silver.
