KAMPALA - Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga has been hospitalised in Kampala over "over fatigue-related illness".

A statement released by her press secretary Sam Obbo confirmed that she was admitted at Nakasero Hospital on Thursday after she developed problems.

However, Obbo said Kadaga's condition is currently being managed by doctors at the health facility.

"Due to the hectic work schedule, fatigue and jetlag, she has had to be admitted in hospital. We hope her privacy will be respected during this period. We wish her speedy recovery," he said.

Kadaga was admitted soon after her return from a "hectic" working tour to Morocco and the US, where she attended the 63rd session of the Commission on the Status of Women at the United Nations headquarters.

Obbo said while abroad, she steadfastly advocated for better policies for women and children in Uganda and across the globe.

Sources at Nakasero Hospital said Kadaga was in "better condition than she had come in".

Security at the hospital remained tight and visitors were subjected to thorough checks. Journalists were not allowed near the hospital.

When the hospital's communication's manager Julius Mugisha was contacted, he said he was not aware.

"I am not in office and I am not aware. I am actually hearing it from you but let me confirm," Mugisha said.

Kadaga, 62, has been at the helm of Parliament since May 19, 2011. She is the first woman to be elected Speaker of Uganda's Parliament.
