The chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Justice Simon Byabakama has lifted a ban that the electoral body had imposed on the Citizens' Coalition for Electoral Democracy in Uganda (CCEDU) following a fall-out on the LC I polls that were held last year.

According to a letter written by Byabakama, the decision to lift CCEDU's suspension followed a series of meetings that were conducted by a joint committee that the electoral body established to review the activities of the electoral monitoring NGO.

Byabakama added that following the suspension of the accreditation of CCEDU for election-related activities on July 4 last year, a joint committee comprising of officials from the EC and CCEDU was established on October 24, 2018, to review and harmonise the EC/CCEDU working relations.

"Accordingly, in a meeting held on February 21, at the EC headquarters, between the Commission and CCEDU officials, the commission has taken the decision to lift the suspension of accrediting CCEDU for electoral related activities," he said.

CCEDU's activities were suspended a day to the July LC I polls last year, with the EC chairperson accusing the NGO of contravening the provisions of S.12 of the Electoral Commission Act in the way it conducts voter education.

Byabakama said at the time that CCEDU's work methods were not only partisan but contrary to the election observation guidelines.
