Vienna College holds show on cyber bullying

KAMPALA - She was the epitome of girl power. Hot, confident with a joyous personality backed with charisma. A bright and hard-working student, the school had high hopes in her academically, until the worst happened. One evening, while chatting with her boyfriend on whatsapp, the young man requested for her nude pictures.
Despite earlier resistance, Nancy madly in love bowed to the boyfriend's request and sent the nudes. Unknown to Nancy, the boyfriend had other intentions and by early next morning, Nancy's nudes were all over social media. In a space of less than 10 hours, Nancy's nudes had accumulated 30,000 views, and 2000 comments, much to the chagrin of her boyfriend whose goal was to have as many likes as possible for his post.

Exposed and humiliated, Nancy never recovered, her self-esteem was greatly affected, she felt vulnerable and powerless, lost interest in life and school and contemplated suicide. All because of cyber bullying.
Nancy's story was one of the skits presented by Vienna College Namugongo students during the schools music, dance and drama competetions which ran under the theme, "Social media: Cyber bullying?" Houses competed in traditional and modern dances, skits, poems, elocution and anthems.

Mohammed Kakiika, the head teacher of the school said cyber bullying is a growing problem that needs to be tackled head on. "Technology has come with a new form of bullying, dressed in a different cloth, but with similar or even worse than traditional bullying. It is something that we fill we should tackle head on," said Kakiika.
The well attended event was graced by among others Nobert Mao, the Democratic Party president and National Drug Authority board chairman Dr. Medard Bitekyerezo, the former Mbarara Municipality Member of parliament. At the end of it all, Cheetah house emerged the overall winners of the 2019 MDD competitions.
"Electric is what best describes the performances today. It was riveting, smooth, funky and groovy at the same time, the students gave it their all," said Khainza Abdalla, a parent at the school.
