Study choices: '7% women go for engineering, manufacturing and construction'

Well, you are seeing more graphs than usual today, huh?

Found this interesting and thought I could draw your attention to this.

The World Bank is saying that only 7% of women choose to study engineering, manufacturing and construction, compared to 22% of men. And that of the students pursuing careers in information, communication and technology (ICT) fields, 28% are women and 72% are men.

Landlord and Tenant Bill, 2018

We learn that the Parliament's committee of physical infrastructure is holding a public hearing on the Landlord and Tenant Bill, 2018.

Members of Kampala City Traders Association (KACITA), Association of Real Estates Agents (AREA) of Uganda and Uganda Human Settlement Network (UHSNET) are taking part.

Remember that on Tuesday, the minister of state for housing, Chris Baryomunsi, appeared before this very committee to present the bill.

This piece of legislation requires an agreement if one is to enter into a landlord-tenant relationship. In that case a landlord is required to provide a copy of agreement to the tenant.

Emergency meeting: Resolutions of MUK Council

The University Council held an emergency on Tuesday, during which they came up with steps to take to "stabilise the university in view of the current situation where some members of staff are not performing their duties".

The meeting observed that the impasse at the country's oldest university has caused "unnecessary loss to the students' community", to parents and other stakeholders of the institution.

One of the resolutions is that all staff who have continued to fulfill their roles, duties and responsibilities are commended.

Another is that matters relating to the suspension of staff or any other matter concerning the governance of the university shall be handled in accordance with the laws, policies and procedures governing the university.

Makerere Law School indefinitely closed

New Vision's Benon Nsubuga:

The vice-chancellor of Makerere University, Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe, has indefinitely closed the School of Law for their continued defying of lawful orders of the management.

Two weeks ago,  lecturers of the School of Law wrote a letter to the VC indicating that his actions of suspending and warning the staff of Makerere University are illegal and no staff should adhere to any of them.

However, the report Nawangwe handed over to the chairperson of Council Makerere University, Prof. Lona Magara, states that management took a decision to close the School of Law because it has been on strike for the last three weeks and they have been inciting other members of staff to continue with the strike.

Nawangwe has also directed all the staff at the school to hand over the university properties immediately and all law students have been directed go back to their respective homes.

Today's two games will feature the table leaders.

KCCA FC will be at home against BUL FC, where they will hope to pick up maximum points and pull further away from Vipers at the summit.

Mike Mutebi's side go into today's 4pm fixture three points ahead of the Venoms, who were held on Wednesday by Tooro United in Fort Portal.

They will face a BUL side who have registered a recent run of results similar to theirs. The Jinja-based outfit are in 4th, six points adrift of 3rd-placed Mbarara City FC.

So it's not just condom use that we are emphasizing today.

As you may - or may not - have known, today is also World Radio Day, to celebrate radio as a medium. It was proclaimed on November 3, 2011 by UNESCO's 36th General Conference after originally being proposed by the Kingdom of Spain.

Conference on girl child education opens

New Vision's Peninah Nyangoma:

Uganda is holding a two-day symposium on girl child education organised for stakeholders to reflect on the gains registered regarding the education of the girl child.

In recent years, government has been promoting girl child education and statistics from the education ministry show that the enrollment of girls in primary schools is on a steady rise - although a lot more still needs to be done.

The two-day conference opens today at Imperial Royale hotel in Kampala.

The director of basic and secondary education, Ismail Mulindwa, said the conference will also be used to discuss the challenges and gaps in the promotion of the girl child education.

  What happened in the Uganda Premier League on Tuesday?


 

It was another busy day in local football as a dozen teams were in action in the StarTimes Uganda Premier League - but all of that produced a measly seven goals in total.

Tuesday's sumptuous menu had holders Vipers SC held by Tooro United FC while SC Villa beat Paidha Black Angels at home. It was a goalless affair at the Champions Stadium as was the case at Greenlight Stadium in Arua. Maroons were beaten at home by Ndejje University while Police FC could not build on their recent resurgence with defeat at Kirinya-Jinja SSS FC.

Prevention of Ebola

 

  • Avoid contact with fruit bats or monkey/apes and the consumption of their meat.

  • Avoid direct or close contact with people with Ebola symptoms, particularly with their bodily fluids, without appropriate protective wear.

  • Wash hands with soap and water or use alcohol hand rub regularly, especially after visiting patients in hospital.

  • Report promptly any person in your home or neighbourhood with Ebola-like symptoms to the nearest health facility or the toll-free number 0800100066.

  • Practise prompt and safe burial of people suspected to have died of Ebola, with the help of trained health workers.

  • Health care workers should use infection prevention and control measures to control and contain Ebola should it cross to Uganda.

  About Ebola - a sudden onset of fever


The Ebola virus causes an acute, serious illness which, if not treated early, is often fatal.

Ebola is introduced into the human population through close contact with the blood, secretions, organs or other bodily fluids of infected animals such as chimpanzee, gorillas, fruit bats, monkeys, forest antelope and porcupines found ill or dead or in the forest. Ebola spreads from human to human via direct contact with the blood, secretions, organs or other bodily fluids of infected people, and with surfaces and materials (e.g. bedding and clothing) contaminated with these fluids. Burial ceremonies that involve direct contact with the body of a person who has died of Ebola can also contribute to the transmission of Ebola.

Humans are not infectious until they develop symptoms.

 

Ebola cases present with a sudden onset of fever, fatigue, muscle pain, headache and sore throat.

This is followed by vomiting, diarrhoea, rash, symptoms of impaired kidney and liver function, and in some cases, both internal and external bleeding (e.g. oozing from the gums and blood in the stool).

Ebola: Alert cases continue to be picked, isolated, treated

By the health ministry:

There is no confirmed Ebola virus disease case in Uganda. Active case search continues in all communities, health facilities and on formal and informal border crossing in all districts, especially in the high-risk ones.

Alert cases continue to be picked, isolated, treated and blood samples picked for testing by the Ugandan Virus Research Institute (UVRI).

Ebola vaccination exercise continues in the high-risk districts. The vaccination exercise has been done in 10 districts. Since November 7, 2018, 3587 frontline and healthcare workers have been vaccinated in 119 health facilities and 13 border points of entry in the high-risk districts.

"The public is further requested to be vigilant and report any rumour, alert a suspected case of Ebola to the nearest health facility or the toll-free number 0800100066.

  No confirmed Ebola case in Uganda - health ministry

 

 

The health ministry has provided details on a Ugandan male who "reportedly presented with Ebola-like symptoms" months before his death in a hospital in neighbouring DR Congo.

The 46-year-old, who is said to have frequented DR Congo for about eight years working as a "construction mason", was hospitalised in November last year and died Friday last week at Bunia Hospital.

The health facility is said to have issued a death certificate indicating that the man, who has not been officially named, died of heart failure and pulmonary tuberculosis.

A surveillance team from the Ugandan health ministry worked with security agencies to track the vehicle transporting the body back to Uganda for burial in Tororo - eastern Uganda.

"Immdiately, the Ministry of Health dispatched a medical team to get samples for viral haemmorhagic fever (VHF) testing and also conduct a supervised burial," the ministry said in a statement.

"The body was transported into the country Monday night through Zombo district up to Pette sub-county in Ayago, Tororo district."

On Tuesday, ministry officials conducted a "dignified burial" of the dead man in Tororo.

"All individuals who were in close contact with the body have been quarantined. There is NO confirmed case of Ebola in Uganda," the ministry later tweeted.

In its statement, the ministry emphasised that there has not been any confirmed case of Ebola in the country since August last year.

"Ministry of Health would like to assure the general public that Uganda has not yet registered any confirmed case of Ebola since the counterpart health ministry in DRC declared an outbreak on August 1, 2018.

"As a ministry, we continue to conduct preparedness activities to keep away the Ebola virus from spreading into the country.

Meanwhile, the health ministry's permanent secretary, Dr. Diana Atwine, said the the results from tests on the body "turned out to be negative, so no cause for alarm".
