Sserunjogi still in the FUBA presidential race

Aspiring FUBA president Nasser Sserunjogi has a point of correction.

He has never promised to pave way for rival Grace Kwizera. He neither thought it nor said it.

"I have never said that I will stand aside for Grace," Sserunjogi said, reacting to a Wednesday story in New Vision in which Kwizera said his opponent backed out of an agreement not to contest the presidency of the basketball governing body at the February 23 elective assembly.

Kwizera said, "He gave me his word and changed his mind."

But Sserunjogi says he "has never met Grace on the issue" but only held discussions with powerful national team manager Mohammed Santur about the possibility of working out a deal.

The push for an agreement arose out of the sense that a battle for the presidency between the two parties from the outgoing executive could fracture a game that has known stability at the top in the 12 years of Ambrose Tashobya.

"I sat with Hajji (Santur) and he told me that it is not good for you and Grace to stand for the same position," Sserunjogi explains.

"Hajji said ‘We are all together, we are one person. We can't be competing against each other'. I told Hajji that is absolutely right." "The statement I made was
that the two of us can't stand.

I have never told Hajji that if Grace is standing me I'm going to stand down," he stressed.

"Then I told him that we should have a meeting, me, Ambrose (Tashobya), Hajji and Grace and then we discuss this issue… but unfortunately around that same period, Hajji's mum got sick and she was admitted in Germany yet the time for nominations was also running out.

"So what we did, both of us had to file our papers for the candidature and to date that meeting has never happened."
