Bugema University bans skimpy dressing, cosmetics

LUWERO - Bugema University management has issued a notice, banning all its female students from wearing make-up, mini-skirts, ear-rings, necklaces, bangles, sleeveless, open tops, coloured nail varnish and trousers, among others.

"No student should come back with the above mentioned next semester. Culprits will face university disciplinary committee for serious action," the notice reads in part.

The university dean of students, George Mupaghasi has told New Vision, that the notice serves as a reminder to those who had ignored their moral culture.

"We have been taking these students through these rules, especially during their orientations but to our disappointment, some of them end up falling culprits of indecent dressing.

Mupaghasi adds that still in their new rules, students are entitled to give the university management prior notice before going anywhere.

"We have done this because in case any of our students get a problem along the way, we are held accountable so, we need to protect them as we reserve the positive image of the institution as well," he says.

"We need these students to dress in a respectful manner as stipulated in our university hand book. Another thing is that, if anything wrong happens to them, as an institution, we equally get affected," he says.

He further says that this ban affects borders and day scholars, and the implementation started on Wednesday, 12, December, 2018.

Background

Having started as a training school for teachers and Pastors for the Seventh-day Adventist Church in 1948, Bugema changed its name from Bugema Missionary Training School to Bugema Missionary College and then to Bugema Adventist College.

Although the institution had applied to offer Theology degrees, in 1976, the Ministry of Education and Sports, and the General Conference of the Seventh-day Adventist, cleared the college to start offering bachelor's degrees in different disciplines. Currently, it's called Bugema University.
