DPP withdraws rape charges against Makerere don

SEXUAL HARASSMENT 

The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Mike Chibita, has withdrawn rape charges against a Makerere University professor Christopher Bakuneta.

The state prosecutor, Caroline Namakoye, has informed Justice Jane Frances Abodo, that DPP has lost interest in prosecuting Bakuneta. This was during the hearing of case on Tuesday.

Namakoye has also presented a withdrawal letter dated November 30, 2018 and dully signed by the DPP, stating that the charges against Prof. Bakuneta be discontinued.

She told court that despite numerous summons, the student who alleges to have been raped was no longer interested in the case.

Abodo ordered that Bakunetta be set free immediately as there is no charge against him.
 
Prosecution had alleged that on March 29, 2016, Bakunetta had canal knowledge with his 22-year-old female student without her consent which he denied.
