Uganda scoops three continental music awards

Bebe Cool, who clinched his first AFRIMA, celebrated the award by thanking Ugandans for the support.

 
Three Ugandan singers, Bebe Cool, Sandra Nankoma and Irene Namatovu scooped awards in the All Africa Music Awards (AFRIMA) 2018 in the AFRIMA awards' gala Saturday night in Accra, Ghana.
 
Bebe Cool, real names Moses Ssali, won the ‘Best Male East African Artiste' award, beating top East African acts, Tanzania sensational singer Diamond Platinumz, Tanzania's Harmonize and Kenyan rapper, Kaligraph. The same category was won by Ugandan singer eddy Kenzo last year.
 
With her Kaddugala album, Sandra Nankoma won the ‘Best Female Artist In African Inspirational Music' award, while Irene Namatovu for ‘Best Artist, Duo or Group In African Traditional' award, thanks to her single, Nsambila Nyuma.
 
First held in 2014 in Nigeria, the award ceremony was established by the International Committee, AFRIMA, in collaboration with the African Union (AU) to reward and celebrate musical works, talents and creativity around the African continent, while promoting the African cultural heritage.
 
The fifth edition of the increasingly prestigious continental awards went down at the Accra International Conference Centre, with a host of music stars gathered from across the continent.
 
Bebe Cool, who clinched his first AFRIMA, celebrated the award by thanking Ugandans for the support.
 
"I would like to thank my fans in Uganda and all over the world for voting for me. It has been a big war, but we have won," the Nsirikamu singer said, accepting the award.
 
Bebe Cool would later take to social media to announce his win and lecture his followers about success.
 
Nankoma also used Facebook to thank her fans, Uganda and the jazz community in an emotional video message.
 
Nigerian singer, Davido was announced as the 'Artist of the year', beating Wizkid, Tiwa Savage and Diamond Platinumz. South African rapper, Cassper Nyovest won ‘Best African Rapper or Lyricist' Akwaaba, a collaboration of Guilty Beatz, Mr Eazi, Patapaa & Pappy Kojo won Song of the year.
 
Eddy Kenzo won ‘Best Male Artist East Africa' and ‘Album of the Year' last year in the same awards.
