KCCA launches traffic control center

The Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA), executive director Jennifer Musisi has launched a pilot traffic control center in order to control traffic jam in the city.
The traffic control centre is capable of remote strategic control, it can remotely monitor and correct faults at the signals.
Musisi said at the centre, in case one of the red lights at the junction failed, a notification will be sent to the in station unit.
Musisi said that in addition, if the national power grid is off and the signals are running on UPS, a notification would be sent to the in section. The UPS can run for at least 8 hours.
The operators inside the control centre will monitor the radio communication of the field activities for the traffic wardens, ambulance, enforcement staff and security personnel.
Musisi added that currently there are 40 cameras deployed and yet to be connected on the fibre network in addition to the installed Police cameras.

Police director in charge Traffic and Road Safety, Dr.Stephen Kasiima explained that the move will see the city register less traffic jams especially during peak hours.
" We have been receiving several complaints from the public over traffic jam. I hope this will help reduce on traffic jam.
The center is constructed with part of the funding from Second Kampala Institutional and Infrastructure Development Project( KIIDP II). The funding is U$175m.
