Migyera and Kakooge towns in Nakasongola district are the latest beneficiaries of a government and African Development Bank (AfDB) funded water project.

The funds for the project were channeled through the Water and Sanitation Development Facility - Central Branch.

Patricia Namala, the publicist of Central Umbrella of Water and Sanitation Authority (CUWSA), said the organisation has carried out major expansions ever since it took over management of the water facilities under its jurisdiction.

She said the Migyera plant has a 100,000 litre reservoir tank and three production wells with a capacity of 18,000 litres per day. It also has a fully furnished office block and a network of pipes.

Namala said the facility serves Dembe, Posta, Kityekyamboga, Police Zone, Mayanja, Migyera, Z- Zone, Kyangogoro, Kyakala and Kalukonge villages. She added that currently, the water system has 360 connections and serves 11,000 residents.

"Previously, the water crisis in Kyakala was worrying and something had to be done. It was as if the area was not part of Uganda," Martin Kisekka, a local leader said.

Jonathan Lukundo, a cattle keeper in Kyakala village described the water facility as a godsend. Lukundo said the situation used to be worse during the dry spell.

Meanwhile, the Kakooge Water Supply and Sanitation System has three production wells with a capacity of 384,000 litres per day. Namala said the system also has an office block, three pump houses and a distribution network covering 24km.

The facility also has 451 connections and serves a population of 8,874 in the villages of; Kibwa, Kirohoza, Kakooge central and Kyabutayika.

Namala said the objective of the umbrella organisation is to enhance the sustainability of water and sanitation services through improved operation and maintenance of constructed schemes in the region.

However, Norbert Nkuggwa, the district deputy chief administrative officer, said over half of the residents of Nakasongola still use unsafe water from springs and water holes.

"People walk long distances in search of water. We want to improve the functionality of water sources, promote hygienic use of water and sanitation facilities. We intend to construct 75 more water sources. We will maintain them by setting up water user committees," he said.
