Two perish in accident at Jinja Bridge

David Kiwema was riding on a motorcycle together with his two twin daughters Patricia Nakato and Patience Babirye and his son Ashraf Walulumba from Kiyindi landing site to Bulanga.

Two juveniles have died on spot and two others critically injured in a nasty accident that happened at the Owen Falls Dam in Jinja district.

The accident which occurred on Wednesday involved a trailer registration number KCN 298F / ZC 9652 that knocked a motorcycle registration UDA 866V which was carrying four people and heading in the same direction with the trailer.

David Kiwema was riding on a motorcycle together with his two twin daughters Patricia Nakato and Patience Babirye and his son Ashraf Walulumba from Kiyindi landing site to Bulanga.

Kiwema was taking his two daughters and his son to see their sick mother Florence Mirida in Bulanga trading centre along the Jinja-Iganga highway.

Among the dead were Babirye and Walulumba. Kiwema and Nakato were rushed to Jinja regional referral hospital where they are still admitted.

According to an eye witness, Kiwema was overtaking the trailer in a bend along the Owen Falls Dam and met with an on-coming vehicle from the opposite direction, which prompted him to swerve as he tried to avoid it, but unfortunately was knocked by the trailer.

The trailer crushed the heads of Nakato and Walulumba leaving brain parts and blood littered in the road.

Immediately after the accident, traffic flow was affected as vehicles were stopped from moving until they had to wait for Police to clear the scene. This caused traffic jam at both sides of the Owen falls dam.

Traffic Police led by Kukundakwe the Officer in Charge of Traffic in Jinja district guided drivers and pedestrians as they removed the bodies.

Bodies of the dead were put on a Police pick-up truck and were taken to Jinja region referral hospital mortuary.

Traffic Policemen managed to clear the road to ease traffic flow. The wreckage of the motorcycle was pulled by residents from under the trailer's cabin where it had got stuck.

Police had started investigations to find out the cause of the accident.
