ACCRA - The Ladies' national golf team rookie, Martha Babirye produced the best score for the team as the fourteenth edition of the All Africa Challenge Trophy teed-off at the Achimota Golf Club in Ghana on Wednesday.

Although her 83 gross was not one to be proud of at such a continental championship, team Uganda welcomed it in their pursuit of at least a third place finish at the biennial championship.

Other team members, Eva Magala and Irene Nakalembe produced an identical 86 gross each with one of them counting to Uganda's fifth place start in the event that has attracted golfers from 18 countries.

Each country is represented by three golfers, with the best two scorers on each team contributing to the team total score in each of the three rounds.

The AACT was born as a biennial event, in Harare, at Chapman Golf Club in May 1992, with 12 participating countries.

South Africa, with 12 victories and who is poised to win even this year's event has dominated the championship since 1992.

Although South Africa has always been victors of the team event other than Egypt in 2006, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Kenya, Egypt and Ivory Coast have produced individual winners over the years.

Norah Mbabazi is the only Ugandan that has ever excelled individually when Uganda hosted the event in 2000.
