Many girls become timid after their first period because they lack knowledge on the subject

Parents have been urged to provide early education on sexual and reproductive health as well as support girls to improve menstrual hygiene.

The call was made by the female district councillor for Kapujan sub-county, Margrate Bena Akol, who also doubles as the deputy district speaker. She said most parents have failed to provide their girls with sanitary pads.

Akol talked about how girls become timid after their first period because they lack knowledge on the subject.

She said this affects them greatly and they fear to tell their parents or anyone else which leads them to skip school.

According to Atim, educators and parents should support young girls especially those who have not yet experienced menstruation by educating them about it because it is a normal thing.

She observed that it is important to break the silence around menstruation by supporting girls and improving hygiene.
