Govt extends piped water to five districts

The Ministry of Water and Environment has extended piped water and sanitation systems to Buwama, Bukakata, Kayabwe, Ntungamo and Mayuge districts to increase access to safe water.

"Although Local Governments, National Water and Sewerage Corporation, NGOs and UN Agencies have also been constructing similar water and sanitation systems across the country in the respective districts, there are places that have not yet received water," Godfrey Hashakimana, the coordinator of the Umbrella of Water and Sanitation Authorities in the ministry said.

Hashakimana said the move is aimed at making sure that there is less pollution in Lake Victoria and consumption of unsafe drinking water.

"This is part of the Lake Victoria Water and Sanitation Project (LVWATSAN Project) in an effort to provide clean and safe water," he explained.

Charles Muwonge, the principal communications officer at the ministry said they have also created faecal sledges that will be used to empty the latrines in these areas.

"These latrines get filled very fast due to the population in these areas. People end up abandoning them to use the water bodies. So these sledges will keep the existing latrines in use because these communities have limited space to construct latrines," he added.
