KAMPALA - Ndejje University Volleyball men's team edged Nkumba University Volleyball Club (NUVC) 3-1 to win the university derby National Volleyball League game on Wednesday.

After losing to table leaders, Uganda Christian University (UCU) last week, Ndejje went back to the drawing board and fixed their mistakes, since then they have won all their games against, VVC, Airforce and Nkumba.

Ndejje now in the fifth position with 11 points lug behind Nkumba who are fourth with 12 points, UCU leads the table with 24 points.

In the women's Serie A University derby game, Nkumba A edged Ndejje Elites 3-1 to top the table with 24 points, however Ndejje comes second with also 24 points but a difference in the set point ratio.

Nkumba team head coach Tonny Lakony is positive his team will make it to the playoffs of the National Volleyball league.

Ndejje are the 2016 champions while Nkumba are the 2017 champions and both teams have represented Uganda at the Africa Club Championships in the respective years of 2017 and 2018.

Nkumba's attack line led by Astreede Agaba and Grace Akiror converted all balls set by their setter Doreen Akiteng to beat Ndejje's blocks in the first two sets, NUVC won on set points (25-19, 25-18, 23-25, 25-17).

However Lakony whose aim this season is to reach the playoffs said that they would be happier if they had won the game on 3-0.

"We aim to reach the playoffs and perhaps win the league title. We played well though we would have been happier if we had won it by 3-0. My team has only lost one game which will affect us in the long run because our goal was to get to the playoffs unbeaten," said Lakony.

Meanwhile the Ndejje Elites coach Alex Mugoda after losing to Nkumba said that the journey to the playoffs is still long and they will polish their mistakes and hope to win in the second round.

"Yes we are a big team but Nkumba is also good and we shall try to work on our mistakes since the journey is still long. We need a win in the second round and play our game till we make it to the playoffs," said Mugoda.

The league resumes this Saturday at Uganda Christian University (UCU) for Serie A and Nsambya for serie B game.
