'Boda Boda' cyclist shot at rally dead

A doctor at Bugiri main hospital who preffered anonymity said the deceased died as a result of over bleeding.

BUGIRI - A 24 year-old boda boda cyclist who was shot during a campaign rally held by JEEMA president Asuman Basalirwa has died at Bugiri main hospital.

Moses Ramathan Walyendo, a motor bike cyclist at the Job less corner in Bugiri municipal council was shot as police battled a group of supporters of Asuman Basalirwa who wanted to forcefully hold a rally at the Busoga university playgrounds on Wednesday.

Walyendo who happened to be a staunch supporter of Asuman Basalirwa was shot by a stray bullet as he tried to escape after a group of supporters threw stones at the police officers who had parked a few metres away from the rally.

Walyendo was shot in the chest and rushed to Bugiri main hospital in critical condition.

A doctor at Bugiri main hospital who preffered anonymity said the deceased died as a result of over bleeding.

"He was admitted while bleeding profusingly and admitted straight away in the intensive care unit but unfortunately passed on," the doctor said.

JEEMA president, Asuman Basalirwa has promised to follow up the matter to ensure the police officer who shot his supporter is arrested and charged before the courts of law.

The police spokesman Busoga east, James Mubi said investigations into the matter were still under way.

Mubi said police is to take action and prosecute the police officer who shot the supporter in case its proved he acted as a result of negligence.

He however blamed the supporters for pelting stones at police officers who were assigned to ensure they don't hold a rally at the university because university property already been destroyed as result of holding the rally inside.
