Mother arrested over dumping baby in a pit latrine

KABERAMAIDO - A mother who is suspected to have dumped her six-month old baby in a pit latrine at Kakuya Primary school in Kalaki sub-county, Kaberamaido district has been arrested.

The District Police Commander of Kaberamaido, Geoffrey Abigaba said, Scovia Akello aged 16 was arrested after allegedly dumping her baby in a pit latrine.

Akello is a resident of Kalaki central in Kalaki sub county. She dumped the baby in Kakuya primary school latrine.

Abigaba said Akello was being charged for attempted murder which is contrary to section 204 of the Penal Code Act.

He said the case had been opened with reference number CRR/072/2018.

However, Akello said she dumped the baby after her mother quarreling and mistreating her. She also claimed that the mother was chasing her from home yet she had nowhere to go to.

She said she had the child with another minor who refused to take the responsibility of taking care of her and the baby.

Meanwhile, Akuko denied mistreating her daughter as she alleged.

According to police records, Akuko reported a defilement case of her daughter but the suspect has never been brought to book.

With the attempted murder charges opened against Akello, the probation officer of Kaberamaido, Samuel  Ongarai said they were devicing means of keeping the baby safe and save him from any injuries.
