NGORA - An ambulance owned by Ngora District Local Government has knocked dead a pupil at Television trading centre in Opuyo parish along Soroti-Mbale road.

Rashida Asadi, aged six and a pupil of Rise and Shine Primary School Soroti was knocked dead Thursday Evening at around 7.30pm.

Police explained on Friday morning that the Toyota Land Cruiser ambulance registration number UAW871D, was heading to Soroti Regional Referral Hospital to take two accident victims from Ngora Health Center IV.

Michael Odongo, the East Kyoga police spokesperson said the child was trying to cross the road on her way home when she was knocked dead.

Odongo added that the cause of the accident could have been reckless driving as the ambulance was overpeeding in a trading centre where the speed would have been lowered.

"It was wrong for the driver to over speed at the trading centre much as it's an ambulance carrying patients to the hospital. Even his destination was now near (around three kilometers)," the spokesperson said.

According to Odongo, the driver identified as Simon Omakenyi, 43, a resident of Ngora Town Council taken to Soroti Central Police Station where he is being held together, with the ambulance.

Baker Ojakol, an eye witness said the deceased was trying to cross to the opposite side of the road when she mate her fate.

"I just saw the girl being knocked, she fell on the left hand but her head was totally crushed by the ambulance," Ojakol said.
