MBARARA - In a bid to avert the rampant kidnap cases that have engulfed the country, the Inspector General of Police, Martin Okoth Ochola urged the public to stop settlements with their captors.

"As per now, we are on top of these crimes. We have worked together with other security organs to arrest and prosecute some of the culprits.

"So far, the number of  rescued victims is high compared to those murdered but we are trying to contain the situation.

"I therefore call upon the public to stop negotiating money with the captors. Just report to our emergence center for rescue" IGP Ochola stated.

Ochola made the remarks on Thursday during his work tour to regions of Greater Bushenyi, Mbarara and Masaka to meet Police commanders and leaders as they try to find a lasting solution to the vice.

The IGP met leaders in Bushenyi and on Friday he met police commanders in the Rwizi region before proceeding to Masaka.

Ochola said that ever since he assumed office, he had not met his commanders in the  various regions to give them tips on how to fight crime.

He commended the work being done by security agencies in trying to save the lives of those that fall prey to the captors, adding that they have introduced an emergence centre at Police headquarters that is now manned by composite police officers and toll free lines.

He refuted recent comments in media where he was reported to have okayed civilians to stone any police officer who comes to conduct an arrest in a cruel manner without identifying themselves.

"I would be the last person to say stone my officers, how can you allow people to stone your children, this shows the  bottom line of some of these people who report falsehoods, they leave the main discussion and report  hoguewash, instead am here to defend the rights of my officers, I never said that" he stated.

Before adding, "some one had said if some one comes who looks shubby and begin abducting people, I took the people through the process, first of all you must identify your self, you must have warrant card, you must tell the person from which unit your are, the offense that person has committed, so the moment you don't do that your are more of a kidnapper, that's what I told them.
