Uganda to host first Conference on Family

 

 

MUKONO - Uganda is scheduled to host the first ever conference on family.

 

The two-day event will take place on May 21 to 22.

 

It is anticipated to be highly interactive, bringing together religious, cultural, political leaders, researchers and Non-Governmental organisations from across the country.

 

The conference will provide a forum to reflect on the state of the family, threats and opportunities to its existence and modalities for mainstreaming family issues at policy level.

 

According to a statement from the event conveners, the confrence that will be graced by the First Lady, Janet Museveni, has been purposefully designed to celebrate and affirm the declaration of 2017 and 2018 as the year of the family in Uganda. 

 

In 2017,Rev. Stanely Ntagali, the Archbishop of the Church of Uganda underscored the fact that Ugandan families were facing deliberate attack by different forces both from within and outside.

 

"Domestic violence, drunkenness, drug abuse, sodomy, poverty, permissiveness and child sacrifice are targeting Ugandan families directly," Ntagali said in an earlier press conference.

 

The event will be organised by Uganda Christian University (UCU), Mukono in conjunction with AfriChild Centre, a research based organisation within Makerere University.

 

It will be held under the theme: ‘The Family in the 21Century: Strong? In Crisis? Changing?'

 

Joyce Wanican, the Executive Director of AfriChild welcomes the idea of holding a conference on the family saying that it is an opportunity to engage all stakeholders to develop a road map to strengthen families in the country.  

 

A key outcome of conference is a declaration on State of the Family which will serve as an advocacy tool used to lobby African countries to prioritise family issues.
