UPDF officer charged with man slaughter, to serve seven years in jail

Abubakari was charged with man slaughter following the death of Pte Kiiza Nelson who was shot dead at Kidegeya range ground last year.

MBARARA -  UPDF Official, Sgt Juma Abubakari was sentenced to seven years in prision  with on Wednesday. He was taken toKyamugorani Government prison . 
 
Abubakari's case ruling came after the convict pleaded guilty as charged during a court hearing at Court martial sitting at Army second division Makenke in Mbarara, yesterday.
 
Abubakari was charged with man slaughter following the death of Pte Kiiza Nelson who was shot dead at Kidegeya range ground last year.
 
According to the charge sheet, it is noted that on November, 28, 2017, Juma, while at Kidegeya range ground, without malice, lead to the death of Pte Kiiza Nelson when he shot at him with a PK Sub Machine gun.

This act is contrary to section 187(1) (2) and 190 of the penal code Act Cap 120.
 
Col. Geoffrey Mujuni the chairman court martial, while reading the judgment noted that the convict pleaded guilty,emphasising that, court convicted him on his own plea.
 
However, Mujuni said that the convict has a right to appeal with in 14 days from the day of the passing of judgement.
 
Mujuni noted that court martial in UPDF was introduced to instill discipline in the force and that whoever misbehaves does it as an individual, and not as an institution.
 
Maj Gerald Bamwitirebye, the defense lawyer said that they are going to appeal the sentence in a higher court.
