Kaweesi suspects back in court

KAMPALA - The12 people still under probe over the murder of former Police spokesperson AIGP Andrew Felix Kaweesi are slated to appear before Nakawa court Tuesday morning to know the status of the investigations in their case.

The accused are Ahmed Shaban Ssenfuka, Umar Maganda, Sheikh Musa Ntende, Hassan Tumusiime, Ibrahim Kissa, Hamid Magambo, Abdul-Majid Ojerere, Sauda Ayub, Osman Muhammed Omar, Asuman Mugoya, Ibrahim Ssemwanga alias superman and Swaleh Ddamulira.

The group was granted bail by Grade One Magistrate Noah Ssajjabbi after completing the mandatory remand period of six months for capital offenders without committal.

On February, 15, defence lawyer Anthony Wameli, who teamed up with Godfrey Turyamusiima and Hussein Bilal, asked court to dismiss the case on grounds that the State had failed to produce evidence pining them.

Today, the State is expected to reply on the application before the court makes its ruling.
 
Kaweesi was murdered on March 17, 2017 together with his body guard Kenneth Erau and driver Godfrey Mambewa by unknown assailants traveling on motorcycles in the city suburbs of Kulambiiro, a few meters from his home.

Last year, their colleagues Abdul-Rashid Mbaziira, Aramanzani Noordin Higenyi alias Taata Abdullazack, Yusuf Mugerwa alias Wilson, Bruhan Balyejusa alias Jimmy Masiga Ogutu, Joshua Magezi Kyambadde alias Abdu Rahman, Jibril Kalyango alias Abu Aisha, Yusuf Siraje Nyanzi alias Jimmy Ssentamu and Shafik Kasujja were sent to the High Court to start trial.

Prosecution alleges that the group between January and March 2017 in diverse districts of Kampala, Wakiso, Mukono, Jinja, Iganga, Bugiri, Busia, Tororo and others at large for purposes of influencing the Government involved themselves in complicity of murder of Kaweesi.

It further alleges that the accused rendered support to Balyejusa and Ogutu, who are members of the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), rebel group in executing terrorism acts.
