Police thwart street protest over sewage system

KAMPALA - The Police have foiled a street protest by city residents and traders after a broken sewage system on William Street gashed out waste, causing an awful smell.

The unbearable smell caused some pedestrians to hold their noses as they jumped over and walked past the flowing sewage.

The city dwellers and traders were heard asking "Why don't we strike over this intolerable smell because it might affect our health?"

It was after the crowd gathered around that the Police swung in action and parked two Police pick-up trucks on William Street.

Police officer Apollo Muhoozi said his men had to be swift to avert any strike because such would paralyse the city since it was near Kiseka Market, an area famous for instigating city strikes.

Muhoozi also said he had to make calls to Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) and National water sewerage Corporation (NWSC) who promised to come to rescue the situation.
 
However, by the press time the broken sewage system had not yet fixed.

The Police had to divert traffic.
