KAMPALA - At least six Makerere University students, including the guild president, Papa Were Salim, have been arrested over protests at the main campus in Kampala.

The others students have yet to be identified.

They were arrested Monday morning by Police during clashes following a protest they had staged over increased tuition fees and missing marks.

The group was also protesting scrapping of hall meals, evening lectures, end of semester exams and sponsorship of students on national merit.

Amid heavy police deployment at the campus, the students staged a demonstration over what they have called "unfair administrative policies".

Papa Were Salim has been the Makerere guild president since his election mid-last month

The protesting students never minded the wet conditions

But they were stopped short in their tracks by Police

Tear gas was an ingredient in Monday's clashes at Makerere University

Arrests were made . . .

 . . .  and loyalties displayed

But despite his show of allegiance, this student protester was peeled away from the guild president by Police

“The new vice-chancellor [Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe] is a dictator," Job Namara, a student of computing and information science, said furiously on a wet Monday morning.

"Ever since he came in office, he has changed so many things. If the university is in debts, the government should pay for it," he added.

"This is not a private university - that we are supposed to pay for everything."

In a statement, the university spokesperson, Ritah Namisango, called for calm.

She said Vice-Chancellor Nawangwe has promised to meet the students and address their concerns upon his return from Nairobi on Wednesday
