Mulago women hospital to be commissioned in July

KAMPALA - The construction of Women and Neonatal Hospital at Mulago is complete and it is expected to be commissioned in July.

Mulago Hospital spokesperson Enock Kusasira told New Vision that all the equipment had been procured and they were in the process of installing them. The facility will improve maternal and new-born healthcare services.

The 400-bed capacity will offer specialised treatment for high-risk antenatal care, delivery and postnatal services, gynaecology services, focusing on obstetric fistula.

Other services to be offered include Invitro Fertilisation (IVF). The IVF is a process that increases the efficiency of human reproduction, which is often not efficient naturally.

In Uganda, fertility services are expensive; one has to pay between sh10m and 20m to access such services in private health facilities.

This technology has never been done in public health facilities.

According to statistics, about 10-15% of the couples in Uganda cannot have children due to infertility.

About 75% of these are due to sexually transmitted infections (STIs), which lead to blockage of fallopian tubes in women and sperm ducts among men.

Kusasira said the hospital will only cater for referral cases. "This is not a walk-in hospital, for a patient to access treatment, she must be referred from another hospital,'' Kusasira said.

He encouraged the public to seek treatment from nearby hospitals, adding that this is why the Government had built hospitals in and around Kampala.

Kusasira said health workers were undergoing training on how to use the new equipment.
