KAMPALA - The ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) has warned the public of "an unscrupulous person impersonating" one of its members.

In a statement issued Friday, the party secretariat talked of an individual impersonating Dr. Kenneth Omona, the deputy national treasurer, and soliciting money from members the public.

Under his cover, the said person reportedly messages or calls his targets.

"This suspect has on several occasions used text and WhatsApp messages or called Honourable Ministers, Members of Parliament, the clergy, relatives, friends  and security personnel among other categories of the public , commonly using 0716711541, among others, to borrow money or  ask for financial support on allegations of being sick, stranded within or abroad or being in an emergency situation requiring urgent attention," the statement, released by the party communications offier Rogers Mulindwa, reads.

According to the party, the vice, which they believe is a way of soiling the reputation of Omona or the secretariat, has been happening for about half-a-year now.

"This  act has been on going for over six months and we perceive it as an attempt to tarnish the personal image of Dr Kenneth Omona and/or the institution of the NRM secretariat," the party said.

The case has since been reported to Police and investigations are underway.

In light of the development, the NRM secretariat has come out to boldly clarify that "Dr. Kenneth Omona has not  been reaching out to the general public for any form of financial assistance" and that he "is not carrying out any fundraising".

The party has, therefore, urged vigilance from the public "against such unscrupulous people to avoid falling victims to their acts".

They advise the public to report to the Police or to their security desk at the party headquarters located on Plot 10, Kyadondo road in Kampala.
