KAMPALA - She has been studying fashion design for only two-and-half years, but Alice Among learnt enough to be able to take first prize at the French Fashion show that took place at the French Ambassador's residence on Tuesday night. And with it a chance to go to Paris and study fashion with the best.

"I can't really express how I feel," an overwhelmed Among, who could not stop smiling said afterwards. "It is a miracle; I could never have even dreamed about this happening to me, it is too much."

Among's winning design was a fusion of French and Ugandan fashion and had elements of the traditional busuuti, together with kitengi and a sash made from bark-cloth.

The fashion show was part of this year's France-Uganda Friendship Week and featured designers from Uganda's Record Fashion School and the École Duperré Paris from France. It followed a workshop at the school premises in Katwe with Paris-based Ugandan designer Stella Atal and designers from France.

Nine designers showcased, including experienced professional designers Atal, Gloria Wavamunno and Ras Kasozi. Other designers were Lillian Kyabaki, Glitz by Nalu and students from Uganda Christian University, Record School and the École Duperré. There was also a pop-up market, where local designers exhibited their products.

Each designer later had an outfit auctioned for charity and among the winning bidders were ambassadors from the US, Italy and France. The winning bids ranged from sh360,000 to sh1.8m, and the designers promised to make the outfits specially for the winners within a month.
