Police officer kills three, shoots self

Julius Emiru, a police constable attached to the Anti-Stock Theft Unit (ASTU) but a resident of Kaberamaido and the police officer in-charge the police post, Corporal Lilian Nandutu were on Tuesday evening shot dead by a Police Constable also attached to ASTU, Alfred Omara Otto.

Two police officers and one civilian have been shot dead by a police constable at Kokorio landing site police post in Kapujan Sub County in Katakwi district.

Julius Emiru, a police constable attached to the Anti-Stock Theft Unit (ASTU) but a resident of Kaberamaido and the police officer in-charge the police post, Corporal Lilian Nandutu were on Tuesday evening shot dead by a Police Constable also attached to ASTU, Alfred Omara Otto.

Police said Omara, a resident of Agago district also shot dead his girlfriend Esther Anyait, 20 before shooting himself. Anyait a resident of Kapujan Sub County was working at a restaurant on the landing site.

Omara is also alleged to have shot and injured the legs of Denis William Imalingat who is admitted at Katakwi General Hospital.

Stephen Oraat, an ASTU told police that Omara chased after him trying to kill him too as soon as he killed Nandutu and Emiru.

"I escaped only after he finished the first magazine. He then chased after Elungat and Anyait," Oraat said.

Genavive Achen,48, an eye witness explained that Anyait dived into the waters but Omara followed and shot one bullet which injured the hand which she had raised as a sign of surrender but he shot the second bullet which killed her instantly.

"After realizing that he had killed his girlfriend, he turned the gun to his lower jaw and shot himself dead in the same water which was almost swallowing them," Achen said.

Katakwi district Police commander, Tonny Ondoga revealed that Nandutu was pregnant and he was to give her a maternity leave in a month's time.
 
East Kyoga Police spokesperson, Michael Odongo said the bodies of the two police officers were taken Katakwi General Mortury on Tuesday but Anyait and Omara were retrieved on Wednesday at around 9:00am after a search by locals and police officers using canoes.

According to Odongo, the shooter and his girlfriend had some misunderstanding which he believes might have caused these gruesome murders.
