KCCA, MoES to ensure schools get libraries

KAMPALA - Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) and the Ministry of Education and Sports (MoES) are in a drive to ensure that all primary and secondary schools in the city and other districts have libraries.

This was revealed by the director of education services KCCA, Juliet Namuddu, and the senior education officer basic education department at MoES, Musa Birungi during a joint press conference at the launch of the Drop Everything And Read (DEAR) week.

DEAR is a special day, which is celebrated worldwide to remind ourselves about the virtues of reading among communities.
 
According to Nammudu, KCCA will ensure that all city schools which are currently under renovation get a library each.

KCCA has 79 schools and 78 were re-organised and information resource centres were set up in the schools.

These schools have been receiving support from development partners to ensure rehabilitation on the schools is done. KCCA has assured the media that it will ensure that they get reading facilities.

Currently, most schools in the city do not have libraries, neither do they have reading corners, however KCCA has a public library in the Rubaga, Kawempe at the KCCA head office.

Birungi said the initiative will be extended to schools outside Kampala.
"KCCA and MoEs will ensure that every school has a mini-reading library to encourage students to read a book daily," Nammudu said.

DEAR in Kampala is supported in partnership with Peace Corps, RTI International, Enjuba and USAID, among others. The day will be celebrated on March 15-16 country wide.
