FIFA WORLD CUP TROPHY TOUR

KAMPALA - The original FIFA World Cup trophy is on Ugandan soil, and local fans are so eager to enjoy a selfie moment with the coveted piece of goldware. In fact, the trophy arrived at Lugogo Cricket Oval in Kampala at about 10:30am, where fans cannot wait have a more intimate moment with it.

Tuesday's weather may not be the most ideal for such an event, but who cares? Here is one opportunity that does not come every other day. Kampala is soaking in a mid-morning drizzle, but the mood of enthusiastic football lovers is not dampened any one bit.

The trophy was driven into the cricket grounds Tuesday morning amid high security on its return to the country. This is the second time Uganda is featuring among a select number of nations as a destination for the World Cup trophy tour. The last time was 2009, ahead of the 2010 World Cup hosted by South Africa.

Ugandans itching to have a selfie with the well-protected trophy only have to buy a Coca-Cola soda as an entry ticket to the cricket grounds. Children and adults alike have thronged Lugogo to grasp this rare opportunity.

The trophy, made of 18 karat gold with a malachite base, standing 36.8cm high and weighing 6.1kg, was flown in Monday aboard a chartered plane, and was received warmly at Entebbe by football and diplomatic officials as well as fans.

A water salute was performed on the plane on the Entebbe airport tarmac. Later, it was taken to State House Entebbe, where President Yoweri Museveni unveiled it amid a shower of camera flashes.
