Former ISO director Teddy Seezi Cheeye knocked dead

KAMPALA - The former director of economic monitoring in the Internal Security Organisation (ISO), Teddy Seezi Cheeye, died Thursday after being knocked by a hit-and-run bodaboda in Nakawa, Kampala.

An eyewitness told New Vision that Cheeye was hit while crossing the road near the Nakawa traffic lights on a wet evening.

He was reportedly from visiting his son at Makerere University Business School (MUBS), about 500 metres away from the point of the accident.

It had just started raining when Cheeye, who was carrying a bag, was crashed into by a bodaboda as he crossed the wide road. He suffered serious head injuries.

The rider, according to the eyewitness, hesitantly rode away after being ill-advised by fellow bodabodas to take off, apparently to escape possible arrest.

Other people around then lifted the dying Cheeye off the wet surface to the nearby Nakawa Shell filling station.

Apparently, there was hesitation to take the badly hit man to a health facility.

By the time the Police arrived at the scene about 20 minutes after the accident, Cheeye had already breathed his last, at the age of 60.

Police transfered his body to Mulago for a postmortem examination. Jinja Road Police said they would rely on security cameras to get the fugitive suspect.

In 2009, Justice John Bosco Katutsi, the then-head of the Anti-Corruption Court, convicted Cheeye for embezzling sh120m of the Global Fund and gave him a 10-year jail sentence.

Cheeye was also ordered to refund sh110m of the sh120m he embezzled.

He appealed in 2010, but the Supreme Court dismissed the case.

Although he was sentenced to 10 years, his jail term was reduced to six years for good conduct.
