Ndejje students filmed themselves before fatal crash

ACCIDENT

KAMPALA - The chilling footage of a group of four students seemingly relishing a wild ride moments before getting involved in a nasty crash on Friday made rounds on social media platforms.

Three of the four students, all of Ndejje Senior Secondary School, died on spot, according to Police.

They were all candidates in last year's Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) exams and were reportedly driving to their school to pick their results, two days after the release of the O'Level results.

The fourth occupant of the silver Toyota Brevis car was, according to Police, rushed to Bombo Military Hospital. Police first said on Twitter that he had succumbed to his injuries, before coming out later to confirm that he was still alive and had been transferred to Kampala.

"We would like to apologize and correct the earlier statement. The fourth student has not passed on as earlier reported but has has been transferred from Bombo military hospital to Kampala," Police said on Twitter.

Police tweeted that the car in which the students were rammed into a lorry "that was parked on the roadside buying bricks at 11:00am on Mile 19, Bombo [in] Luwero district".

Investigations into the deadly episode are underway.

Final moments alive

In the nine-second video that is being shared online, one of teenage boys is seen holding a phone or camera, shooting what appears to be a moment of thrill inside the car.

In the background, in the camera view, two other occupants are seen. One, wearing glasses, is behind the wheel and the other in the back seat. The fourth student is not shot in the footage, save for a moment when his hand appears briefly.

The boys, unaware of the looming hand of death before them, are wearing black T-shirts and speaking Luganda.

"Tujja, tujja, Ndejje!" the occupant in the back seat speaks straight into the camera. "Ndejje, we are coming!" is what he meant. Music is heard playing inside the car.
