Judge wants remand home built in Lango

APAC - The resident judge has called on the district leaders in Lango region to advocate for a remand home to be built in one of the district in the region to help rehabilitate juvenile offenders.

Lady Justice Winifred Nabisinde said most of the children who commit offences of the capital nature walk scot-free due to lack of remand home in the Lango sub-region.

"We want the leaders to join us and we speak the same language" she said.

Nabisinde was speaking during the opening of the first High Court criminal session for
Lango region for the law year 2018 at Apac Magistrates' Court on Monday.

She warned suspects to desist from telling lies to court during the course of prosecution.

"Some of the suspects want to defeat justice by telling lies. That is why some of them end up getting a deterrent instead of a lenient sentence," Nabisinde said.

She urged offenders to be honest with the lawyers representing them in courts of law.

Jude Okumu, the Grade One Magistrate said  the Government has upgraded Apac Court to a Chief Magisterial Area.

He said out of 360 cases which were reported at Apac Court last year, 220 were felonies to be handled by chief magistrate.

Nabisinde is expected to try and dispose of 45 criminal cases in one month. The cases include 31 cases of murder, 7 of aggravated defilement, four of rape and three of aggravated robbery.
