Progress out of the group stages of the Commonwealth Games Rugby Sevens became a dream more than a realistic prospect after Uganda were drawn in Group D alongside reigning Olympic champs Fiji and sevens force Wales.

Sri Lanka, seen as the whipping boys, are the other team in the pool and they represent Uganda's best path to a victory. For Uganda coach Tolbert Onyango, qualification to the Main Cup is extremely complicated, to say the least.

"The presence of Fiji, who are Olympics reigning champion will make it difficult for us to qualify for the Main Cup because only the top team in the pool qualify," Onyango told New Vision Sports.

The Commonwealth Games are due April 4-15 in Australia and Uganda are one of Africa's four representatives in the rugby field, with South Africa, Kenya and Zambia the others. Uganda qualified as 2017 Africa Sevens winners and will be making their fourth consecutive appearance in the rugby competition of the quadrennial Games.

Both Fiji and Wales are regular members of the HSBC World Rugby 7s series and their level of high-grade exposure means they will contend for top spot in Group D ahead of Eric Kasita's Sevens.

Uganda will take part in the Hong Kong Sevens before heading to the Gold Coast for the Commonwealth meet and Onyango says the priority is success at the former tournament, which will naturally help his team prepare for the latter event.

"Our main focus is to qualify for the HSBC World Rugby 7s series and we head to Hong Kong targeting to qualify, then during that tournament we shall be fine tuning our team for the Gold Coast games," Onyango explained.
