JINJA - The National Resistance Movement (NRM) in Jinja, including the party youth league has vowed to back the NRM flag-bearer for Jinja East constituency, Nathan Igeme Nabeta in the forthcoming bye-election slated for March 15, 2018.

The NRM devotees also castigated the independent candidates, who have declared interest in the seat, claiming to be backed by NRM big wigs in the area, saying they will only stick to the official party candidate.

This was revealed by the district NRM general secretary, William Kato Kaziba, during a press briefing held at the party offices on Lubas Road in Jinja town on Tuesday. He distanced himself and the party from those who are purporting to be sent by the party, other than the official flag-bearer.

"The NRM has only one candidate and that is Nabeta whom the people of Jinja East constituency gave the flag in 2015 and because of that, there will be no party primaries. We are all behind him," Kato said.

He added that those who are misleading voters by telling them lies in the name of the NRM party should stop or risk disciplinary action for breaching the party rules.

Kato echoed that whoever has interest in contesting for the seat should wait for other chances, but for not now, when the party has flag-bearer.

The Jinja East constituency by-elections has so far attracted 10 candidates willing to contest to fill the vacant seat after the Court of Appeal nullified Nabeta's victory over electoral malpractices.

The nomination of candidates will be carried out on February 13 and 14.

The constituency has over 29,000 voters according to the national register of the 2016 general elections.
