Delivering his Christmas homily during the 11 O'clock mass at Christ the King Church, Kampala, the parish-priest, Msgr Gerald Kalumba asked Christians and all Ugandans allow the newly-born baby Jesus, the King of Peace, to dwell and reign in their hearts.

The Prelate attributed the socio-political and economic problems in the country to the tendency by the people to live and act independently of God their creator.

"On many occasions we have become proud and detached ourselves from God, which is why our hearts are filled with violence, hatred and self-centeredness. Our country, prior to the 196, was regarded highly by the colonialist, who referred to it as the Pearl of Africa. Unfortunately, after we acquired independence, we began to destroy it through wars, hatred and vices like tribalism, nepotism, violence and corruption. Let us use this Christmas to invite God back into our hearts, so that he becomes the master and guide of our lives," Kalumba said.

Kalumba later attacked critics, who accused religious leaders for not being aggressive against political irregularities in the country. He said that the people themselves, not the religious leaders, voted the MPs who they are now criticizing.

"I think it is unfair to blame us for the short-comings in the country because it is not us who sent the MPs to parliament. It is also not us who asked President Museveni to go to the bush in the 80s. I think what is important for all of us, is to know that whatever action we take has an effect on this country, now or in the future. We should therefore be mindful to take only informed and non-sentimental decisions."
