Katikkiro pays tribute to AD Lubowa

The Kattikiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga has paid tribute to veteran journalist, independence negotiator and first speaker of Buganda's reconstituted Lukiiko in 1993, Aloysius Darlington (A.D) Lubowa. Lubowa died last week after a long illness. He was 90 years old. Lubowa was laid to rest on Tuesday.

"Having served as minister in the Kabaka's Government just before the 1966/67 Crisis, and having attended the Lancaster House Conference that negotiated the terms of Uganda's independence, A.D filled the office with a lot of knowledge and experience. He significantly contributed to the re-enactment of Lukiiko procedure and regularly advised the Katikkiro on the running of Kingdom affairs," he said.

At the requiem mass to celebrate his life in Lubaga Cathedral, several people spoke highly of a man with a penchant for neatness, a master story teller and co-founder of Uganda Eyogera newspaper.

Lubowa was until his death last week one of two surviving members of the Buganda delegation that negotiated the Constitutional Conference at Lancaster House in London and the subsequent Uganda Independence conference at Malborough House in London the following year. The other was Dr. EBS lumu, who is over 100 years now. A witness to history, he was one of Kabaka Muteesa's advisors.

The 4^th of 13 children, Lubowa was born on June 08, 1927 to Leontio and Lucia Ntaate of Bikira in Buddu- the fourth of13 children. His father was a local catechist in Bikira parish, Masaka diocese. He attended Bukalasa minor seminary and Bikira Teacher Training College. He later joined the journalism profession, first working as an editor for Matalisi newspaper and later joining hands with Miti Kabazzi to start Uganda Eyogera newspaper.

Lubowa's newspaper also worked very hard in agitating for Uganda's independence.

He served as a member of Kyadondo County in the Lukiiko. He became local government minister in 1962 when he participated in the Uganda Independence conference at Malborough House in London.

He later served as Minister of Justice(Omulamuzi) and as regional commissioner for Buganda during Yusuf Lule's government in 1979. When traditional kingdoms were restored, he workedas the first speaker of Buganda Lukiiko, following the Coronation of Kabaka Mutebi in 1993. He served deligently for four years and later became minister of state without portfolio under Kattikiro Mulwanyamuli tenure.. Until his death, AD Lubowa has been serving in different advisory capacities in Mengo, always providing wise counsel and guidance whenever needed.

He was member of Christ-The King church (10:00am) choir along with the late Valerian Mayega. He also served on the central organizing committee of Kampala Archdiocese and chairman of one of Uganda's first football clubs: Nsambya FC.

He was married to Bernadette Nassuuna Lubowa( she died in 1999) and their 8 children.
