Ibanda farmers get coffee hurlers

Dec 05, 2017

The project will be implemented in 31 other districts across the country.

The Permanent Secretary for Local Government, Ben Kumanya, has urged the people of Ibanda to embrace the Community Agricultural Infrastructure Programme (CAIIP).

He said this will help them fight poverty and by enhancing commercialisation in agriculture.

Kumanya yesterday launched three coffee hurler processing machines in the sub- counties of Kashangura, Kicuzi and Rukiri.

The three sub-counties are part of the 68 sub-counties across 31 districts across the country.

CAIIP-3 is a follow-on project to two existing projects of CAIIP-1 and CAIIP-2. The project consists of three components, that is Rural Infrastructure Improvement, Community Mobilization and Project Management. The project is funded by African development bank.

Kumanya asked farmers to scale up production in order to meet its capacity.

The Ibanda chief administrative officer, Robert Abenaitwe, urged farmers to harvest quality coffee that meets international standards.

Mary Bashongoka, the Ibanda deputy Resident district commissioner, asked farmers to produce enough coffee to meet the demand of the hurlers.

"The government has spent a lot of money in installing these machines so you must own them and make sure you feed it with enough coffee" she said

Aggrey Mushabe, the Kagongo Division Chairperson thanked NRM Government for the initiative but requested that the farmers in the area be connected directly to the markets outside the country to avoid being cheated by middle men's.

Other districts where the same project has been implemented include  (Buhweju, Bundibugyo, Bushenyi, Hoima, Ibanda, Isingiro, Kabale, Kabarole, Kamwenge, Kanungu, Kasese, Kiruhura, Kisoro, Kyegegwa, Masindi, Mbarara, Mitooma, Ntoroko, Ntungamo, Rubirizi, Rukungiri, Sheema); Central Region - 2 districts (Luwero, Nakaseke); Northern Region - 3 districts (Apac, Kole, Oyam); and Eastern Region - 4 districts (Bugiri, Busia, Mayuge, Namayingo).
