Truck loaded with logs plunges into River Nile

Several travellers are stranded on either sides of River Nile at Laropi in Moyo after a truck loaded with free logs pushed the ferry off its pier.

Police are investigating the incident where a lorry slid off a ferry and plunged into River Nile at Laropi landing site.

Witnesses said the driver of a trailer loaded with logs was from Moyo destined for Adjumani. There were no injuries reported, according to police.

Andrew Drani, one of the witness said the incident happened on Monday at about 9:00 am. According to Drani, the trailer that was carrying a heavy logs.

"We witnessed a nasty scene. It was heartbreaking to see the trailer plunged into river Nile as it was getting onto the erry," Drani said.

Agaba, who said that police was by last evening trying to retrieve he trailer from the river, however declined to reveal the identity of the driver and other passengers in the trailer.

By press time, the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) the operators of the ferry had not yet issued any advisory about the ferry operations.

Allan Ssekamatte, the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) public affairs managers asked for a text message, but at the time of filing the story he had not responded while Ivan Onapa, the Engineer for Moyo station was not available for comment.
