Police in Lukaya town council, Kalungu district have arrested over 80 people in an impromptu operation to combat rampant criminal activities.
The operation led by Vianney Birungi, the officer in charge of Lukaya Police Station said they launched the operation on Saturday night combing through several hideouts in which the huge number was apprehended.
This followed the surging petty and hardcore crimes in the district including theft, burglary, marijuana smoking, murder, defilement among others.
According to Birungi, also a resurgence of anonymous letters threatening to kill residents instigated the operation. Police seized several narcotic substances and other tools and instruments which could aid committing of crimes.
According to Geoffrey Engwangu, the district Police officer, these operations will continue during and after the festive season in order to create aconducive environment for everyone.
He added that they are screening the suspects in a meantime and the criminals will be presented in court after investigations.
The Police also cautioned residents to be vigilant as they approach the festive season and report all suspicious activities and people before it's too late to track or handle.
