Student nurses and midwives at Mulago will first go through patriotism training before they attend classes. This is intended to make them conscious as they carry out their noble duties.

Speaking during the patriotism pass-out of 240 nurses and midwifery students on Friday, the principal of Mulago School of Nurses and midwifery, Eva Nampiima said "As the Nurses and midwives serve the patients they need to be ethical in order to provide the best service,'

Patriotism programme is a presidential initiative by President Yoweri Museveni which he launched in 2009.

The ultimate goal is to produce a new breed of enlightened citizens committed and devoted to national causes.

Since its inception, over 300,000 Ugandans have undergone its training. These include students, teachers and headteachers.

Mohammed Mayanja, who oversees RDCs in the Office of the President appealed to the nurses to have a sense of sacrifice for their nation to ensure that as they grow up they are able to contribute positively to the development of the country.

Mayanja asked students to be change agents in society and lead by examples. Mayanja also asked female students to use the skills they have attained to defend themselves when they are attacked.
