Handball: Over 40 teams to take part in Apako Memorial

A memorial cup for fallen handball star Harriet Apako is to be held this weekend at Soroti Sports Ground.

Sheila Agonzibwe the president of Uganda Handball Federation (UHF) said the one day event has attracted 45 teams from across the country.

The teams are from the different universities, secondary and primary schools in the country.

"It's going to be an annual championship where we also hope to raise funds for building a state of the art monument in her memory," Agonzibwe said.

Apako a former national netball team player died in 2015 in Kampala.

Lucy Anoo, the Soroti Municipal sports officer hailed the organizers for remembering Apako for her contribution to the sports fraternity.

"We have already put in place playgrounds that can be used for the championship. It is upon the district to ensure that the teams are presented" Anoo said.

She explained that the competitions shall be an avenue for tapping up talents from upcountry handballers.

Apako was part of the She Cranes squad that participated in the 2015 Netball World Cup in Australia where Uganda finished 8th.
