Nyakasura old students re-unite to rebuild their school

Old students of Nyakasura School, one of the oldest secondary schools in Kabarole district on Saturday came together to raise funds to renovate restore Nyakasura to its past glory.

The school is renowned for having produced outstanding personalities and most of them turned up for the dinner held Tooro Golf Course and made contributions in fundraiser.

The fundraising committee chairperson, David Kihumuro, said the fundraising drive seeks to raise at least sh1.5b.

Several old students have staked both money and equipment to the best performing students and teachers in order to boost performance.

Kihumuro said that the old students had also contributed sh5m towards the teacher's savings scheme with an aim of improving their welfare.

 "We are happy that the school is regaining its glory with the current administration and several projects are being undertaken including co-curricular," he said.

He said the old students association had created a task force to conduct a situation analysis of academic performance at the school.

 "As old students, we have the responsibility to rebuild our school and return it to greatness. We ought to start giving back," he urged.

Eng. Gilbert Businge, an old boy of the school said that they had embarked on massive mobilisation of the old students in ensuring that they support the school.

"This is the school that made us who we are now.  This is the time when we should support and ensure that we revive it," Businge said.

Frank Manyindo, the school headteacher said that he was working with the old students to increase the enrolment of students.

He said that the school was facing a water challenge since the water pumping system was vandalised and that students walk to fetch water from the stream.

"The structures are old and some of them have leaking roofs. They need to be renovated,"Manyindo said.

Some of the prominent old students of Nyakasura include Justices of Uganda's Supreme Court (some retired) including Justice Seth Manyindo, Justice Herbert Ntabgoba, Justice Steven Kavuma, Justice Patrick Tabaro, Justice Richard Butera and Justice Paul Mugamba.

The late Omukama of Tooro, Olimi Kaboyo, father of Omukama Oyo also went to Nyakasura School.

Others are Hon. Adolf Mwesige, the defence minister, Prof. Edward Rugumayo, Amb. Crispus Kiyonga (China envoy), Hannington Karuhanga, Maj. John Kazoora,  Jaberi Bidandi Ssali, Maj. Gen Benon Biraaro, Hon. Tim Lwanga, Hon. Beatrice Kiraso, Prof. Abdu Kasozi, Prof. Steven Tickodri-Togboa and journalists Timothy Kalyegira and Andrew Mwenda.

The list also has Dr. Jan Tibamwenda, Prof. George Kihuguru, Prof. William Banage, Hon Aston Kajara, Hon Kamanda Bataringaya,  Margaret Muhanga, Gen. David Sejusa (aka Tinyefuza), Maj. Gen Fred Okecho, Ben Kavuuya,  Kajabago Ka-Rusoke and Patrick Kagoro.
