Darts: Okwi optimistic ahead Kenya Open

Despite failing to take a national team for the East African Darts Championship happening over the weekend in Nairobi, Police team manager Mathias Okwi is optimistic his side will fly the Uganda flag high at the individual level in the Kenya Open.

Okwi told New Vision Sport that the individual players that travelled to Nairobi are good enough to get good results in the Kenya Open tournament that will run alongside the East African Darts Championship.

"We did not take Team Uganda because of security fears in Kenya, but we have travelled as individual participants and I believe the participants who have travelled are all national team material and will deliver," Okwi stated.

Team Uganda had been supported by National Council of Sports (NCS) to a tune of sh3.5m but the Uganda Darts Association (UDA) chairman Col. Felix Oboya insisted that the anxiety isn't suitable for the team's travel to Kenya.

NCS chairman Bosco Onyik when contacted said, "We gave them money but they didn't go but that money is theirs at any time they want it."

According to UDA secretary David Tabaro, a contingent of 15 people have travelled to Kenya and they include; Okwi, Geoffrey Onen, James Otim, Patrick Ochieng, James Leto, Mariam Namugwanyi, Jackie Ngarambe and Janipher Kageye, Dinah Amoding, Sande Amonyi, Andrew Emomeri, Isaac Passi, Augustus Ndigendawa and Isaac Odoki.

"We decided to go as individual players and we shall now compete in the individual category of the Kenya Open," Tabaro said.
