Former Mulago boss Dr. Kaggwa dies

Former Mulago hospital executive director, Dr Lawrence Kaggwa, is dead. Kaggwa worked as the executive director of Mulago; Uganda's National Referral Hospital for 12 years.

Kaggwa had been admitted at the Uganda Heart Institute at Mulago hospital since October.

A retired senior consultant surgeon, a specialty he practiced and taught at medical school for a long time, Kaggwa became the Mulago Hospital executive director in 1993.

Kaggwa left Mulago in 2005 to join the Ministry of Health as the Director Planning and was replaced by Dr Edward Naddumba.

Kaggwa later worked with the African Medical Research Foundation (AMREF) as a consultant.  He was also a board member of Nsambya Hospital where he served for many years. He was the vice-chairperson of the board and the chairman human resources committee of the board.

Who was Kaggwa?

Kaggwa was born in April 1948 in Kiryasaka village, Masaka district, to Dominic Njala and Dorottia Nalubwama.

Kaggwa went to Buyoga Primary School for part of his primary education, before joining Bukalasa Seminary from where he completed his primary. He joined St Henry's College Kitovu in Masaka for O' level and did his final exams in 1966.

He later went to St Mary's College Kisubi for A' level before joining Makerere University Medical School in 1969. He graduated with a degree in medicine in 1974.

Kaggwa did his internship at Mulago hospital from 1974 to 1975 before being posted to Kitagata hospital as a medical superintendent.

He also worked as the Bushenyi district medical officer before he was transferred to Bugiri in 1976.

In 1977, Kaggwa enrolled for a master's degree in surgery, which he completed in 1980. He then became a tutor specialising in surgery at medical school up to 1987.

He then got a job as a consultant surgeon at Mulago Hospital. In 1993 he was appointed Mulago's executive director, and in 1995, he became a senior surgeon.
